Shelter joins Toby Inlet Catchment Group for Winter Planting
This is community. Yesterday a team from Shelter worked side-by-side with the Toby Inlet Catchment Group (TICG) in the pouring rain to plant a staggering 400 native seedlings on the Quindalup foreshore.
TICG put out the call for on-the-ground assistance for a winter planting along the Quindalup Foreshore – an annual activity in their volunteer schedule. Twelve Shelter employees from the brewing and hospitality areas jumped at the chance to give back to the local community and preserve our treasured coastal environment.
Helen from TICG explained that coastal plants are imperative for creating and protecting sand dunes. We learnt:
• A short background of the succession of sand dunes
• The steps for planting a seedling, with fertiliser, water, mulch and guard protection, for the highest chance of success
• The best placement for each type of plant such as creepers and eucalypts
• That mulch is spread on the outside of the guard to protect the plant and prevent weeds from encroaching.
While the rain was relentless, this didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the workers, who powered through to complete the task in two hours. A cuppa and homemade biscuit never tasted so good!
Huge thanks to the Shelter crew for their support and being such troopers in the rainy conditions, and to TICG for their ongoing commitment to the conservation and restoration of our local area.
