Line in the Sand supports Adopt a Spot Program Extension

Year 4 students from Margaret River Primary School participate in a planting activity in 2024.

Line in the Sand is excited to support the extension of the successful Adopt a Spot program run by Nature Conservation Margaret River Region (NCMRR).

Adopt a Spot has been running since 2017, with predominantly year 4 students from nine schools in the south west region gaining incredible experience and knowledge through planting native flora and caring for an adopted site.  Traditional Owners from the Undalup Association teach students about the cultural significance of the specific focus areas, and local volunteer groups collaborate with on-the-ground activities.

Line in the Sand has supported Adopt a Spot since 2020, and we were delighted to see NCMRR receive a Special Commendation for the program in 2022.

In response to high demand for increasing the reach to further primary schools in the Capes area, LITS has recently committed funding for NCMRR to secure an additional project officer and resources to extend the program to Dunsborough Primary School and Our Lady of the Cape Primary School at the northern end of the Cape.  Each school has been allocated an adopted spot, to learn about and care for, located close to the school grounds.

Commencing in Term 2 this year, long term NCMRR staff member Mandy Polley has taken on the new role of Adopt a Spot Officer for the northern Cape region. Activities have been scheduled for planting, cultural excursions and return site visits, which may include weeding, brushing, watering, monitoring and rehabilitating.  Josh Whiteland from Koomal Dreaming will provide cultural education for these two schools.

Across the 11 primary schools in the Cape to Cape region, 530 students are now involved in the Adopt a Spot program.

We’re thrilled that more south west students, and our local environment, will benefit from this amazing program. We look forward to visiting the newly Adopted Spots when planting activities kick off later this month!
