Background
Line in the Sand received a significant funding grant from the State Government via Tourism WA to develop an environmental awareness and education concept to address increasing environmental pressures caused by the growth in population and tourism in WA’s south west. The initiative is inspired by the “Palau Pledge”, where innovative marketing and use of digital technology enable damaging behaviour to be significantly altered through clever communication.
The Problem
The Our Better Nature concept was developed by Line in the Sand and leading marketing specialists who immersed themselves in the south west’s regional issues via consultation with environmental groups, park rangers, local community and First Nations custodians.
The research found our natural asset is struggling:
The increase in population, visitation, and industry is causing environmental degradation.
People only see the pristine, unaware of the area’s fragility and that the aggregation of small actions significantly depletes the natural “capital”.
Walking and riding off designated tracks, 4-wheel driving on beaches, walking dogs in National Parks and unlawful camping are just some of the actions that are putting the asset at risk.
The Solution
Through the Our Better Nature campaign, we are appealing to the better nature in all of us to help preserve and restore the natural environment that we love so deeply.
There are some practical ways we can help and even the smallest act can make a big difference:
Leaving it how we find it, taking rubbish away, walking on designated tracks, making sure there's enough fish for tomorrow's fisherman, camping and 4-wheel driving where we're supposed to.
Our Indigenous custodians know a thing or two about this place, so let's embrace their culture, listen to their guidance and celebrate their knowledge.
Donate or volunteer time to revegetate and restore the land. All actions big and small will have a positive impact.
Roll-out
Line in the Sand intends to introduce the Our Better Nature campaign as part of the Cape Naturaliste Conservation Enterprise - a significant collaborative community project being driven by the Friends of Meelup Inc and the Meelup Regional Park Management Committee. The initiative addresses increasing threats to the biodiversity, cultural and economic values in the Cape region.
