"Beach Goals" by Heavy Duty
"Beach Goals" installation by Heavy Duty, a moving comment on climate change.
Did you get the chance to kick the footy through the goals installed at Cottesloe Beach during the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition this year?
Line in the Sand is a proud supporter of this year’s Tourism WA Invited Artist, Heavy Duty, and their installation “Beach Goal’s” which was designed to encourage conversation around rising sea levels.
The full-sized Australian rules football goal posts were installed in the shallows of Cottesloe beach, providing an interactive installation that was a culmination of two Aussie icons - the ocean and footy.
Heavy Duty’s installation “Beach Goals” was referred to as the most popular attraction at this years event by David Handley, founder of Sculpture by the Sea. However, the most significant part of this installation, was in its messaging. The work highlighted rising sea levels due to the current climate crisis and starts a critical conversation that global warming draws minimal attention, while football scores are at the forefront of our minds.
This installation of significant scale was a major task for the artists, engineers, event staff, and the Town of Cottesloe, with council concerns around public liability issues due to the goals posts being in the water. But it was huge artistic achievement that was incredibly successful despite these hurdles.
Heavy Duty has said “Thanks to Line in the Sand for helping us find the team and resources to establish our important message at Sculptures by the Sea.”
Perth guerilla art collective, Heavy Duty, utilises public and interactive art to highlight a range of social and environmental issues. From the '“Deforestation Detour” sign, in collaboration with WA Forest Alliance, displayed on the side of the highway that drew social media attention to the logging of native forests in Jarrahdale to commentary on Perth’s homeless situation on a shelter seat in Perth’s CBD. Heavy Duty has garnered attention from social media and a range of media sites including Perth is ok!.
Supporting local initiatives that bring about a strong environmental message through community engagement is at the forefront of Line in the Sand Group’s ethos.
